If you sell fragile items—whether it’s artisanal pottery, high-end electronics, or glass bottled beverages—your biggest nightmare is the customer opening a box of broken shards. “Fragile” stickers on the outside aren’t enough; the protection must be engineered into the box itself. At Versatile Custom Boxes, we use the science of corrugated material to manufacture packaging that acts as a shield for your products.
It’s Not Just Cardboard; It’s Corrugated Fiberboard
Many people use the term “cardboard” loosely, but for shipping, we rely on corrugated fiberboard. This material consists of a wavy layer (the “flute”) sandwiched between two flat linerboards. This arch structure is an engineering marvel, giving the material an incredible strength-to-weight ratio and natural cushioning properties.
Understanding Flute Profiles
The size of the waves (flutes) matters immensely for protection. We manufacture boxes using various flute profiles depending on the need:
- B-Flute (approx. 1/8″ thick): Excellent crush resistance and a good printing surface. It is the standard for die-cut mailers and provides solid puncture resistance.
- C-Flute (approx. 3/16″ thick): The most common shipping flute for larger boxes. It offers good cushioning and stacking strength.
- E-Flute (approx. 1/16″ thick): Very thin and compact. It is not great for heavy shipping on its own but has a superior surface for high-quality printing. It is often used for retail boxes (like cosmetics) that will be placed inside a larger master carton.
- Double Wall (e.g., BC-Flute): For extreme protection, we combine two layers of fluting. This “double wall” construction is essential for very heavy industrial items or very valuable fragile goods that cannot risk any impact damage.
The “Crumple Zone” Effect
For fragile items, the outer box isn’t enough. We manufacture custom corrugated inserts that suspend the item away from the outer walls of the box. If the box is dropped, the insert absorbs the impact energy (acting like a car’s crumple zone) before the shockwave reaches the glass or electronic device inside.
